Auditions are open to everyone!  Ethnic diversity is strongly encouraged. 

(“Color blind” casting is HCT’s policy, and part of the theatre’s vision.)

 

HOW AUDITIONS WORK:

Auditionees will be reading from the script. 

Scripts may be checked out for 48 hours with a $10 refundable deposit. 

Come to the HCT office to pick one up.

 

For musicals, prepare a song you like to sing.  

You may sing any song, from any genre.  

(Melodic songs like show tunes, church music, folk songs, etc. are better than contemporary pop songs.)

Bring sheet music if possible; no recorded accompaniment.

 

There may be dancing or improvisation as part of the audition.

Please dress in clothes you can move in.  Please, no flip-flops.

 

Please look carefully at the rehearsal schedule and performance dates.

Being in a show at Hickory Community Theatre requires a great time commitment.  

If you will only take a larger or smaller role because of your own time concerns,

or if you are auditioning for just the experience, WELCOME!--

Auditions for CRAZY FOR YOU at Davidson Community Players

Davidson Community Players announces open auditions for its June 2012 production of the Gershwin classic, CRAZY FOR YOU.

This high energy comedy which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin musictells the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930's playboy, whose dream in life is to dance. And despite the serious efforts of his mother and soon-to-be-ex-fiancée, Bobby achieves his dream! Memorable Gershwin tunes include I Got Rhythm, They Can't Take That Away From Me, Embraceable You and Someone to Watch Over Me.

Auditions will be held Sunday, February 12 at 2:00 pm and Monday, February 13 at 7:00 pm.

The production will be directed by Melissa Ohlman-Roberge, with musical direction by John Smith and choreography by Emily Hunter and Felicia Davis.

The production will open June 21^th and will run thru June 30^th. Full rehearsals will begin in late April. While tap dancers are encouraged to audition, not all roles require tap, and all those cast will have the opportunity to take free tap dancing classes from February through April.

A relatively new musical, having opened on Broadway a mere ten years ago, CRAZY FOR YOU feels like classic Americana. The musical boasts an award winning script and score, having garnered 3 Tony Awards, 3 Outer Critics Circle Awards, and 2 Drama Desk Awards, three of these in the best musical category. CRAZY FOR YOU epitomizes the adage “everything old is new again” as the music of George and Ira Gershwin comes alive alongside the hilarious dialogue penned by Ken Ludwig. Ludwig has proven himself a master of comedy with his award winning Lend Me a Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo, both previously produced by Davidson Community Players.

 

Roles are available for actors, singers, dancers and tap dancers ages 14 through adult. There are also very limited opportunities for children ages 8-13 who tap very well. Crazy for You provides a wide range of opportunities for dancers as well as non-dancers, and will be cast color-blind. Auditions will be held Sunday, February 12 at 2:00 pm and Monday, February 13 at 7:00 pm. Callbacks will be held on Tuesday, February 14^th by invitation only. Auditionees should plan to sign in by 3:00 pm on Sunday and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, and need only attend one session. Auditions will be held at Davidson Community Players’ Armour Street Theatre at 307 Armour Street, Davidson. Spring break appointments for students away at school can be made by contacting Melissa at melissa@davidsoncommunityplayers.org.

 

All auditioners should prepare 16 bars of a song that shows off their vocal range. Audition pieces should be memorized. Please bring music in the proper key, an accompanist will be provided. Accapella singing is NOT recommended. A dance call will follow the vocal audition, please dress comfortably and be prepared to move. If you tap, please bring tap shoes. Auditioners should also bring a recent headshot if available, list of theatrical experience and list of conflicts for the late April-June time frame.

 

CHARACTERS

BOBBY CHILD: New Yorker, in love with musical theatre and with Polly. Must be able to sing, act and dance well. Good comic timing and able to do physical comedy. (Age range: 20-35)

 

BELA ZANGLER: An established Broadway producer. (Age range: 35-65)

 

POLLY BAKER: Postmistress in Dead Rock, Nevada, the "All American Girl." Full of life and spunk, a bit of a tomboy. Must be able to sing, act and dance. (Age range: 18-25)

 

IRENE ROTH: New York Society debutante, engaged to Bobby Child. A bit snobby and very effected dialect. Must be able to sing, act, move well. (Age range 20-35)

 

EUGENE FODOR: A British tourist. Comedic role, a bit stuffy. (Age range 30-55)

 

PATRICIA FODOR: Eugene’s sister. Also British, comedic role (Age range 25-50)

 

LANK HAWKINS: Saloon proprietor in Dead Rock, Nevada. Classically rough, tough, and mean, also loves Polly. (No solos, Age range: 25-40)

 

EVERETT BAKER: Polly’s father, a good-hearted man. (No solos, Age range: 45-65)

 

MRS. LOTTIE CHILD: Bobby’s mother, very controlling and business oriented. (Non-singing role, Age range 50-65)

Auditions for THE SPITFIRE GRILL

Directed by David F. Chapman David F. Chapman’s theatre work has taken him to Vietnam, France, Edinburgh, London, Hungary, Cambodia, Montreal, and around the US. Recent credits include A Christmas Carol at Canal Park Playhouse, Pillow Book at 59E59, and Hairspray at Millbrook Playhouse (PA). David has received directing fellowships from Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Horizons, and the Drama League, as well as Fulbright and Luce scholarships. A member of the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab and DirectorsLabChicago, David graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and lives in New York. The Spitfire Grill marks his CFRT debut. The Spitfire Grill details the story of a young woman (Percy) who is released from prison and decides to start a new life in a small Mid-western town. She finds a place for herself working at the Spitfire Grill. But she – and the town – have old wounds that need healing, and it takes an unusual contest to pull everyone together to learn from one another and about themselves. The show is a tuneful and stirring tribute to small town life, and offers a charming and honest tale of hope and redemption. (Musical) Rehearsals are scheduled to begin February 21. Performances: March 15-April 1. All roles are available at this time. PERCY TALBOTT- Female, early 20s. Our protagonist, but don’t tell her that. Rough-edged but not jaded, despite having been knocked around by life. Knows how to protect herself. Slight southern Appalachian dialect. Strong folk / country belt to a “D” with some head voice required. HANNAH FERGUSON- Female, 70s. The town matriarch. Tough-skinned, straight-talking, no-nonsense woman who still harbors a memory of better times. She knows what you’re having for breakfast, but she doesn’t need any help to get it, thank you. Mezzo/alto chest range. SHELBY THORPE- Female, mid-30s. Undergoes perhaps the greatest transformation of the show. She begins a shy, repressed homemaker, but finds her inner strength through her friendships with Percy and Hannah. Folk soprano with a high belt to “D”. CALEB THORPE- Male, early-40s. Shelby’s husband, a man with traditional values and a strong sense of what a man’s duty should be. He’s been underemployed since the quarry closed some time ago. Solid folk/rock voice with an edge (top “G”). SHERIFF JOE SUTTER- Male, mid-to-late 20’s. A small-town policeman with dreams of a bigger life. He’s our romantic lead, although you’d never guess it if you met him. Likable, intense, and restless. Strong folk tenor to a “G” (touches an “A”). EFFY KRAYNECK- Female, 50’s (flexible). Postmistress and town busybody. She always seems to stir the pot, and she has an opinion about everything. Mezzo/alto chest range. THE VISITOR- Male, mid-40’s. A non-speaking role that requires a commanding, mysterious presence. The actor must be able to communicate volumes without words. NOTE: The show takes place in ruralWisconsin. A standard Midwestern dialect may be used by all characters except Percy, but no one is exaggerated or “countrified.”   Auditions for ON GOLDEN POND Directed by Artistic Director Tom Quaintance Retired couple Ethel and Norman Thayer spends every summer at their home on Golden Pond. This year, their adult daughter visits, bringing along her boyfriend and his 13-year-old son. The rocky relationship between father and daughter, the generation gap and the difficulties facing a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage, all combine to give this play a unique insight into the modern family. A beloved theatre classic that is touching, funny and warmly perceptive. (Drama) Rehearsals: Are scheduled to begin March 20. Performances: April 20-May 6 Roles are available at this time include: Ethel and Norman Thayer are cast. Charlie Martin -35-50. A laugher. Rustic, simple and quite charming. Big Maine accent a plus. Chelsea Thayer Wayne- 35-45, daughter of Norman and Ethel. Calls Ethel “mommy” and Norman “Norman.” You can guess where the nervous edge comes from, as well has the sharp sense of humor. Billy Ray- 12-16. Flippant, but only to cover his awkwardness. He is eager and bright. His posture is terrible. Bill Ray- 35-50, Dentist boyfriend to Chelsea, father to Billy. Tends to be serious but has a good sense of humor when he remembers to use it.

Auditions for Encore! at Cape Fear Regional Theatre

It’s the show loyal fans and patrons of CFRT have been waiting for; performances highlighting 50 years of Cape Fear Regional Theatre performed by your favorites. Special guest stars will return to the CFRT stage to recreate the roles that have endeared them to audiences memories.

Calling singers, dancers and all those (ages 15 and older) who want to celebrate the history of the theatre to be members of this once in a lifetime cast. “King Lear” will be presented on the Jeffers Theatre mainstage March 16-April 1.

Auditions for Alice in Wonderland and Peter Rabbit & Friends

Auditions for The Green Room Community Theatre’s All-Youth shows for the 2011-2012 season, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Rabbit & Friends, are scheduled for Sunday, December 11 & Monday, December 12, 2011 at 6:30 pm. 

Auditions will be held at the Old Post Office Playhouse located at 10 South Main Avenue, Newton, NC 28658.  Please enter at the lower level door at the back of the building (on South Ashe Avenue).

There are roles available for boys and girls ages 6 through 18.  No prepared monologues are necessary, and there may be some cold reading from the script.  Neither of these shows are musicals, so you do not need to have a song prepared. Please be prepared to stay for the entire audition time and wear comfortable clothing for easy movement.

You may audition for either show or for both. You must be able to be at all performances of the show, including scheduled school shows.  See dates below.

Alice in Wonderland is produced by Automated Machine Design, Inc. and is directed and adapted by David Brown.  Production dates are February 10, 11, 17, & 18, 2012 at 8:00 pm and February 12 & 19, 2012 at 3:00 pm.  Daytime school shows are scheduled for February 16 & 17, 2012.  This production is the retelling of the classic story by Lewis Carroll which follows Alice’s journey into a world of talking animals, comic royalty, and races where the contestants run in circles.

Peter Rabbit & Friends is The Green Room’s Second-Stage production and is directed by Sara Scronce.  Dates are February 24, 25, March 2 & 3, 2012 at 8:00 pm and February 26 & March 4, 2012 at 3:00 pm.  School shows are scheduled during the day on February 23 & 24, 2012.  Join Peter and other wonderful Beatrix Potter characters as they are brought to life on stage.

Seeking (all roles are available unless otherwise specified; all characters except Fontaine speak with an eastern North Carolina dialect):

Part One - AUGUST SNOW and NIGHT DANCE:

(Younger) Neal Avery:
20s. The boy that everyone has always loved. Store clerk at his family-owned clothing store. Charismatic, carefree and easy to fall in love with, but is beginning to feel the pressure of everyone’s adoration. Has been married to Taw for a year, and is conflicted and caught between her, his mother and his best friend. Though he is young, he has lost his youthfulness, and is weighed down. Feels trapped in his marriage and in his small home town. Fighting to be free, but uncertain what to do once he has that freedom. Restless, but trying to be a good husband; his personal demons prevent that from happening. To escape, he retreats to dreams and alcohol. Adores his friend and family, but cannot live up to their expectations.

Roma Avery:
Mid 40s-50. Never shy about giving her opinion and making her feelings known to others, no matter the cost. Loves her son, and wants to hold onto him and keep him as close to her as possible. Unapologetic, and likes things her way. Hardened by years of heartbreak and loss. She recognizes her faults and embraces them. Likes control, and rules her son and those around her with an iron fist. Steadfast and unwavering in her opinion, and does not allow herself to be overly emotional. The kind of woman you want to have on your side, but would be terrified to have as an enemy.

(Younger) Dob Watkins:
Man, 52. Widower; has lived on his own for many years. Emotional pain and alcohol are beginning to affect his mind and body. Lonely; feels neglected by his children. Acts as a surrogate father for Neal. He was in love with Roma in his youth, and still maintains a great respect and love for her. Though he has seen a lot of difficulties in life, he still carries a sense of joy and happiness with him.

(Younger) Taw Avery:
CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. Woman, 20s. Desperately loves her husband and wants to save her marriage. Has only been married a year, and yet she and Neal are worlds apart. Being adopted has affected her deeply and she longs for the perfect family. She is devoted, strong, smart, serious and demanding of those around her. She is fiercely protective of herself and Neal, and wants to leave the small town they call home because she feels suppressed by it. Her relationship with her mother-in-law, Roma, is tense. She has a calming controlled presence when dealing with others, but will not be walked on. Hangs on to those she loves rabidly to escape the loneliness that she feels.


Part Two – BETTER DAYS:

(Older) Neal Avery:
59. Conflicted about the loss of his mother. Has always felt stifled by her, but is now lost without her. Loves his wife, and looks to her for his strength. Has invested his dreams for a better future in his son, but knows that he must let him go and find his own way. Neal has let go of some of his past demons, and is ready to make a new start; knows that better things are in store for him.

Fontaine Belfont:
Man, 55. Confident and handsome. Has returned to the one place he felt most alive. Suave, debonair and kind-hearted. His relationship with Roma has been something that he has always cherished. He wants her house because much of her heart lives there, and it is the place he can still be the closest to her. Speaks with a Virginia dialect.

(Older) Dob Watkins:
Man, 81. Widower who has lived on his own for many years. Emotional pain and alcohol are beginning to affect his mind and body. Lonely; feels neglected by his children. Acts as a surrogate father for Neal. Wwas in love with Roma in his youth, and still maintains a great respect and love for her. Though he has seen a lot of difficulties in life, he still carries a sense of joy and happiness with him.

(Older) Taw Avery
CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. Woman, 58. Wife, mother and teacher. Has given up a lot to keep her family happy, but does not regret it. Has learned to live with the price she has paid to be married to Neal. Ready to be free of her mother-in-law and to finally have Neal to herself. Suffocating in the house, and longs to have place that she can call her own. Devoted to her son; much of her joy lies in him.

Porter Farwell:
CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. Man, 59. Captain in the Navy. Has been gone for 30 years. Left his home to save himself from his love for Neal. Has now returned an independent man. Caring, nurturing, gentle and loyal. Has a lonely air, and has remained a confirmed “bachelor”. The Averys are his family, and he values them above all else. Wants to buy Roma’s house because a piece of him will always live there, and it is the closest thing he has had to a real home. Believes he has now found peace with himself and his love for Neal, allowing him to return home.

Character Breakdown:

Luke, male, 25-30, born-again gay Christian, in great physical shape, attractive, innocent, aspiring NY actor. Luke just wants Adam to believe in God (so he won't go to hell).

Butch, 50-55 male, (the name says it all) Hard nosed, right wing, Southern born-again Christian. He is Luke's homophobic father, who believes in Creationism. He raised Luke after he found God and his mother, Arlene, continued to party.  

Holly, female 35-45, a candle store owner and Adam's best friend and confidante. Her faith resides in self-help groups and 12 step programs. She is compassionate and witty.

Brandon, male 25-35, a successful friend of Luke's. Deeply religious, reserved and serious.  He has even deeper issues with his homosexuality than Luke.

THE SANTALAND DIARIES by David Sedaris.

Runs 12/6/2011 -12/23/2011.

David / Crumpet: (male, late 20s to mid 30s)  Unemployed and cynically idealistic about New York, David is desperate enough to apply and accept a job at Macy’s being one of the elves in Santaland.  Though he is hardened by his elven initiation, he is able to find joy (though it be perverse at times) in his interactions with shoppers, Santas and other elves. He has a limit to how much holiday cheer he can take, but also has a keen sense to know who the good people actually are.
*Actors should prepare a1-2 minute comedic monologue and will be given a side from the script.
