Position: UNC Charlotte Department of Theatre is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 2012.  Teaches 2 courses/semester including Costume Design and Costume History and designs costumes for 4-6 productions/year. Also responsible for supervising associated student labs each semester and ongoing development of the undergraduate curriculum. High expectations for developing and maintaining a profile in the professional theatre and/or a record of publication commensurate with a tenure-eligible assistant professor.

 

Required qualifications: M.F.A. in Costume Design and college-level teaching experience or equivalent professional experience.

 

Desired qualifications: Experience in designing period, modern, dance, and opera productions. Professional design experience; experience working with a diverse student population.

Setting: The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a doctoral, research intensive university located in one of the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan areas on an expanding modern campus. Department/FACILITIES: The Department of Theatre is part of the College of Arts + Architecture which houses the departments of Theatre, Dance, Music, Art, and the School of Architecture.  Robinson Hall, our new state-of-the-art performance facility, includes a 300+ Proscenium Theatre, intimate Black Box Theatre Lab, and fully equipped informal performance lab located in the adjacent Rowe Arts Building. The Costume Lab has both domestic and industrial machines, laundry facilities, craft lab with paint booth and dye lab with vat.  Faculty, student, and guest artist works are regularly performed as part of the season of fully-supported main stage productions.  The Department has a full-time faculty of 13 and typically hires about 6 part-time faculty and guest artists per semester. There are approximately 90 Theatre majors. The program offers a B.A. degree in Theatre and Theatre Education, as well as, a Masters of Arts in Teaching.

NCTC State High School Play Festival!

The North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) is thrilled to announce new partnerships with Greensboro College and Lenoir-Rhyne University. At the 2011 NCTC State High School Play Festival, the two students (one male and one female) who are presented with the Outstanding Achievement in Acting awards will receive scholarship offers from these colleges. Lenoir-Rhyne University will offer each of the students a $20,000 theatre scholarship and Greensboro College will offer $30,000 scholarships.

In addition, teachers from high schools advancing to the State Play Festival will have the opportunity to nominate non-acting students for a $30,000 scholarship to Greensboro College to study Design/Tech, Costuming, Theatre Education, or Stage Directing/Management. Greensboro College will interview students and award up to four scholarships at the State Play Festival awards ceremony! More information about this process will be provided to schools advancing to the State Festival.

All of these scholarships are contingent upon meeting admissions requirements and enrollment in the respective schools. They will be spread over four years and are theatre-department specific.

About the NCTC High School Play Festival

Each fall, more than 2,000 students from approximately 90 schools across the state participate in the NCTC High School Play Festival. The festival is an opportunity for students at NCTC member schools to showcase their work, learn from others, make new theatre friends and celebrate their achievements. Schools present 45 minute plays and receive valuable feedback from industry experts. The event functions both as a showcase and as a means of assessing and improving the standards of theatre arts programs in the state.

The 2011 High School Play Festival will take place at eight regional sites across the state, on October 28-29 and November 4-5. Regional festivals are hosted by Meredith College, Mt. Tabor High School, Rocky River High School, Union Pines High School, Washington High School, The Paramount Theatre, Kings Mountain High School and Western Carolina University. Two plays from each site will advance to the State Festival at Greensboro College, November 17-18. The two most outstanding productions at the State Festival advance to represent NC at the Southeastern Theatre Conference Convention in Chattanooga, TN, in the spring. The 2011 Festival is made possible by sponsorship support from the North Carolina Arts Council, Wells Fargo, The Hillsdale Fund, The Beattie Foundation, The Arts Council of Wayne County, and The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte; with scholarship support provided by Lenoir-Rhyne University and Greensboro College.

Auditions are held over two nights, and you may choose either night to audition. Auditions are held
on our Mainstage. No need to make an appointment – we’ll get you signed in when you arrive!

We list approximate age ranges of the characters – but it’s always a good idea to come by and
check out the script so you can get a feel for the characters.

For non-musical auditions, all audition material is provided and will be available at the auditions.
Generally, you will be asked to read pages from the script in front of the director, the stage
manager, and another reader.

HOW AUDITIONS WORK:
Auditionees will be reading from the script.
Scripts may be checked out for 48 hours with a $10 refundable deposit.
Come to the HCT office to pick one up.
For musicals, prepare a song you like to sing. 
You may sing any song, from any genre. 
(Melodic songs like show tunes, church music, folk songs, etc. are better than contemporary pop songs.)
Bring sheet music if possible; no recorded accompaniment.

There may be dancing or improvisation as part of the audition.
Please dress in clothes you can move in.  Please, no flip-flops.

Please look carefully at the rehearsal schedule and performance dates.
Being in a show at Hickory Community Theatre requires a great time commitment. 
If you will only take a larger or smaller role because of your own time concerns,
or if you are auditioning for just the experience, WELCOME!--
 but please let the director know your intentions.

Greensboro Playwrights' Forum Seeks Scripts

The Greensboro Playwrights’ Forum is seeking scripts for its 19th Annual NC New Play Project. 

No entry fee, $500 cash award along with a workshop production for the selected play(s).

The deadline is November 15 and it is open to North Carolina residents and students.

Actor's Theatre of Charlotte Auditions for CUTTIN' UP

Actor's Theatre of Charlotte would like to announce auditions for CUTTIN' UP, the poignant new comedy adapted by Charles Randolph-Wright, based on the book by Craig Marberry.

 

Auditions will be held on October 29th 2 pm-6 pm at 650 East Stonewall Street.

 

Auditions will be by appointment only. This production will begin rehearsing the first week in January and will run February 10- March 3.

ABOUT THE PLAY: In barbershops across America, more history is taught than in any classroom. Haircuts tell tales-a departing soldier wants to ship out sporting a new fade, young men with dreadlocks brag about women, or a father christens his son with his first trim. The barbershop is a community, and its denizens are the storytellers of their time. York, SC, native Charles Randolph-Wright crafts a memorable collection of personal history, current events and community lore. These colorful stories illustrate one remarkable truth: "When you have history, you belong."

Director Chip Decker will be casting 8 roles. Many actors will be portraying a wide range of different characters so versatility is a MUST. All roles compensated.

ANDRE - African American male, 40's. CHARISMATIC, ITINERANT, SECRETIVE

 

HOWARD - African American male, over 60. STRONG, TRADITIONAL, DISCERNING

 

RUDY - African American male, 20's. NAIVE, TALENTED, STREET SMART

 

WOMAN - African American female. Plays every woman through the course of the show, from a sexy young woman to a strong willed grandmother. Must be very versatile.

 

MAN 1 - African American male, 20's-30's. Plays a variety of characters, from street hustler to proper gentleman. Also needed: British or West Indian accent.

 

MAN 2 - African American male, 30's-40's. Plays a variety of characters, from hip hop southern boy to Creole cop. Also needed: Creole accent  

 

MAN 3 - African American male, 40's-50's. Plays a variety of characters, from to a mega church minister to a cantankerous Texan. Also needed: Texan accent. Yeehaw!

 

MAN 4 - African American male, 50's-60's. Plays a variety of characters, from a crazy scientist to Don King.
