NCTC 2010-2011 Annual Report - High School & Middle School Play Festivals

High School & Middle School Play Festivals

The High School and Middle School Play Festivals are an opportunity for students at NCTC member schools to showcase their work, learn from others, make new theatre friends and celebrate their achievements. Schools present 45 minute shows to adjudicators, who provide knowledgeable and encouraging feedback. In 2010, over 2,000 students from over 120 schools participated in the Play Festivals, which took place at 10 regional sites across the state.

NCTC has offered me many opportunities and experiences. The dedication, time, work and focus required to prepare for the Middle School Play Festival is astounding. These kinds of opportunities are great for middle school kids to be exposed to as they begin to figure out what they really love. One of the most exciting things that I gained during NCTC was relationships. I made so many new friends and met so many new people that I will never forget."

"Being involved with NCTC has inspired me to introduce theatre to kids that otherwise might not experience it. I always thought theatre education just started in high school; I didn't realize it even existed at a middle school level. At the beginning of the year, I approached the principal at Kings Mountain Middle School and told him I would like to start a "little sister" drama department.

He was on board with my idea, and now every Thursday I go over to the middle school and teach the students theatre games, skills, and concepts. The pilot year has been successful, with 30-35 students participating. I am also directing a play with them that will go up in May.

NCTC is more than just doing a play for the sake of doing it - it is to learn from other schools, meet kids from other schools, and overall grow as a theatre person. I've gained friends from NCTC, I've learned high levels of professionalism, and I've just had FUN."

Arts & Science Council launches power2give.org with a significant investment from Knight Foundation

Unique online fundraising platform connects people to cultural projects

Launches August 29

 

The Arts & Science Council (ASC) will launch www.power2give.org, a new fundraising platform to support arts, science, history and heritage projects in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, on Monday, August 29, 2011. 

The site will offer a unique way to match local arts and cultural projects to individuals and corporations interested in making a difference. Organizations will list needs for a specific project– for example, dancewear for underserved children or set design for an upcoming production. People visiting the site will then be able to pick a need that interests them and make a donation.

The site will launch with funding requests for more than 50 projects from about 30 organizations.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has joined ASC as a founding sponsor of power2give.org through a $250,000 investment – with the majority of the funding going to match donations made in Charlotte and Miami, when the site launches there in the fall.

“This new platform will give people a personal connection to the organizations that create culture in our communities,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s vice president/arts. “power2give.org also strives to engage new audiences and donors – meeting them where they are, which is increasingly online.”

power2give.org is a result of ASC’s focus to address the future of funding the cultural sector through innovative means, and respond to current trends in philanthropy. High net worth giving from individuals is down 71% from 2007 according to the Center on Philanthropy. Meanwhile, 2010 trends indicate an increased number of gifts with smaller average gift sizes, further growth in online donations and a strong desire from donors to see where their gifts go. The site also creates a closer relationship between donors and the organizations they support.

“The philanthropic landscape is changing and power2give.org is one example of how ASC is adapting to continue to provide the financial resources needed to fuel the cultural community in our region,” said ASC President Scott Provancher.  “There are a lot of compelling projects in need of direct support.  By donating to projects, coupled with the generous matching gift from Knight Foundation, individuals can turn specific needs into a reality.”

Currently, non-profit organizations that have received funding from ASC in the past five years can post projects in need of funding on power2give.org for up to $10,000.  Organizations will promote their projects to individuals through a variety of print, electronic and social media channels.  Projects will have 90 days to be funded.  ASC will look to possibly expand the opportunity to artists and other non-profits to post projects on the site in the future.

Upcoming Auditions at The Drama Center of City Arts

The City Arts Drama Center is holding auditions for the following productions:

Aladdin & the Wonderful Lamp
Auditions for Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp will be held by the Greensboro Children's Theatre Friday, August 27 from 5-8 pm and Saturday, August 28 from 1-4 pm.

Auditions are open to all children in grades 4-9. There will be cold readings from the script. No preparation is necessary. Based on the Tales of the Arabian Nights, the play tells the story of Aladdin, a poor boy who finds a magical lamp, unloosens the genie inside, tries to outsmart the evil vizier vying for the lamp, and manages to fall in love with the Sultan's beautiful daughter. There are lots of good roles. It is not a musical.
Performances - October 7-9 (Greensboro College)

Eight Different Plays by 8 authors and 4 directors.  Short plays, a short rehearsal period and a full set design.  Come join the tradition.

GOD'S VISIT by Evan Guilford-Blake.  A casual remark from Bobby gets him an accidental audience with God.
HONEST by Richard Costello.  A couple looking to buy a new brownstone have a run-in with a neighbor who is less than on the up-and-up.
MIDNIGHT TRAIN by Flip Young.  Rosie wants to flee her home life before it sucks her in, but would-be boyfriend Danny isn't so quick to move.
RESCUE 411 by Jini Zlatniski.  Mandy discovers that the paramedics who have come to save her boyfriend are lunatics.
REVELATIONS ON A STREET CORNER by Andy Ralston-Asumendi.  Cookie chases down her father who has left the retirement home with a lady friend, only to learn something new about their relationship.
TRASH TV by Tommy Trull.  Harrison and his mother struggle to make do on low-rent Sesame Street, which has seen much better days.

9th and 10th Short Tales for Children
Auditions will be October 15 (1-4 pm) and March 10, 2012.

Directors for Short Tales are selected from area colleges and high schools and performers must be in grades 4-9.  If you are interested in directing for us, please contact Rosina Whitfield, Youth Theatre Director.  College students may be eligible for class credit, please check with your adviser.  High school students must be in 11th or 12th grade and have strong background in theatre (a teacher recommendation is encouraged).

As an added feature this year we will audition and rehearse some of the shows at area recreation centers before performing at the Greensboro Historical Museum, November 19-20 & April 21-22.

The Pegasus Project
The Pegasus Project is a program for Teen writers and actors. 

Guilford County Teenagers are encouraged to submit a 10-page play in standard format by November 1 to Stephen@PlaywrightsForum.org to be considered for a staged reading in the 10th Annual Greensboro Fringe Festival.  Auditions for these selected plays will be December 5, 7-9 pm at the Greensboro Cultural Center and are open to grades 9 - age 20. 
Performance will be February 11 at 2:05 m.

The Cape Fear Regional Theatre's 50th Season is huge! We need your help in all aspects of theatre craft - backstage, costuming, scenic
construction, lighting and sound assistance, administrative, box office, etc. No experience required, just a real interest and a desire to help. Come early (at 5:00) to meet the staff and learn about our golden anniversary season.

Open auditions are held every year at the beginning of each season.  Open Auditions give CFRT directors an idea of the talent and interest available in the region.

Audition Requirements: Auditionees should be prepared with a monologue and/or your best 16 bars. Ages 16 and older please. Perusal scripts for the season are available in the CFRT Business Office, M-F 9:30 - 4:30.

Note: Plays will not be cast from these auditions. It is to learn of your interest. Individual auditions will be scheduled for each production as it appears in the season calendar.

CFRT has auditions throughout the year for all of its season and special shows.  Auditions for each show are announced prior to the audition date through local press/media, audition mailers, email notification and website announcements.  Generally, depending on the show being cast, CFRT auditors ask to see a monologue, song and/or dance, not to exceed two minutes in length.  Scripts are available for perusal at the theatre Business Office, 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday.  Character breakdowns are always available on-line prior to the scheduled audition.

One-act comedy about an insecure actor with a dominating stage mother who also happens to be his agent. Centers on the opening night of an updated production of a Greek classic.

Two actors play all 22 characters. Both actors should have a facility with portraying multiple characters, and should be versatile both vocally and physically.

Male, appears 35-45. Characters in this track include Joel, an out-of-work actor looking to make his mark; Kay, Joel’s agent’s flighty assistant/sister; and several other characters in the theatre company performing the Greek tragedy.

Children’s Theatre of Charlotte Auditions for Ensemble and Classes

Children’s Theatre of Charlotte will hold auditions for School of Theatre Training Level IV Intensive and Specialty Classes and Level V Ensemble Company on Saturday, August 27. Auditions for both Levels will be held that day, and students must sign up for an audition slot online in advance.

Level IV Intensive and Specialty Classes are for students in grades 8-12 who have completed Level III Focus Area classes and demonstrate a commitment and desire to complete an in-depth course of study in theatre. Students are assigned to an Intensive or Specialty class based on their audition; class concentrations are determined by students' talents and abilities.

Students in grades 10-12 with a strong commitment to theatre work are encouraged to audition for Level V Ensemble Company, a unique pre-professional training opportunity. This intense program is intended for serious and dedicated young actors, and both merit and need-based scholarships are available. This season, the Company will produce a full-scale production of “Rhinoceros.”

There may be dancing or improvisation as part of the audition. Please dress in clothes you can move in.  Please, no flip-flops.

Please look carefully at the rehearsal schedule and performance dates. Being in a show at Hickory Community Theatre requires a great time commitment.   If you will only take a larger or smaller role because of your own time concerns,
