Children’s Theatre of Charlotte has summer employment opportunities available to graduate and undergraduate students. Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Compensation
$7.25/hr (40 hours per week minimum). Partial housing stipend provided at partner organization for non-Charlotte residents.

Summer Camp Counselor
Camp Counselors will have direct supervision responsibilities working with children ages 3 -18 during Children’s Theatre of Charlotte Summer Camp. Duties include classroom assistance, drop-off and pick-up, snack time, post care and some administrative duties. In addition to the daily duties, the Counselors will have the opportunity to observe and collaborate with Children's Theatre Teaching Artists.
Job Requirements
• Minimum of two years of college required with a background in theatre or theatre education.
• Experience working with a variety of ages.
• Reliable transportation is required.
• Comfort with administrative duties.
• Experience with customer service and/or interacting with parents of young people.

Summer Administrative Assistant
The primary roles of a Summer Administrative Assistant are to complete administrative duties in relation to summer camp. These duties include generating camp materials such as roll sheets, story handouts, programs, name tags, and mailings while maintaining communication with parents, teachers, and summer staff. Administrative Assistants will also work directly with Summer Camp Counselors and Teaching Artists to offer support, as necessary, with supervision of students during camp operations.

Job Requirements:
• Minimum of two years of college required with a background in theatre, theatre education, or administration.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and phone etiquette.
• Experience working with children.
• Detail oriented and organized.
• Interest or experience in Graphic Design preferred but not required.
• Experience with customer service and/or interacting with parents of young people.

Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is now accepting applications from current high school students for Junior Intern positions with our summer camp programs. These are volunteer positions which require a minimum three week commitment.

OnStage is a unique performance opportunity available to 3rd-12th grade students who participate in the School of Theatre Training. This event consists of four productions with a cast of approximately 40 students per production. Each production has its own stage management crew. Rehearsals occur over a five-week period with one weekend of performances at ImaginOn.

Stage Manager – Compensation $1,000/project

Flat Rock Playhouse Seeks Associate Artistic Director

Flat Rock Playhouse, The State Theatre of North Carolina, is the largest professional producing theater in North Carolina. The theater has a sixty-year history of artistic achievement and is now seeking an Associate Artistic Director to take a leading role in furthering the organizations artistic goals.

Job responsibilities include: directing mainstage and second stage productions, managing the theater's recently launched New Works Initiative, season planning, oversight of visiting artists, New York and local casting, interfacing with the Apprentice Director and YouTheatre Artistic Director, managing the artistic associate and artistic interns, and supporting the artistic vision of the Producing Artistic Director.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished Director or Director/Choreographer of musicals and plays, with experience in new work development. He/she must possess a collaborative spirit, a commitment to developing work that emotionally engages an audience, and a desire to be a part of a wonderful community in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, 30 minutes from Asheville.

Adam Faw: NCTC Board Member In The News!

High School Theater: Adam Faw Sets the Stage

Almost everyone has at some point uttered the phrase "I don't know what I want to do when I grow up."

While such an attitude is often stigmatized as -indicative of sloth and -dispassion, it is in fact a key characteristic of the so-called "Renaissance Man": an -intelligent, creative individual with a myriad of talents and interests. In -general, the longer it takes someone to make up his or her mind about a career, the more unique and socially valuable that career will be.

"I still have no idea what I want to do when I grow up," says Adam Faw, the 31-year-old theater teacher at Pinecrest High School. Having taught at Pinecrest for the better part of the past decade, Faw has worked long and hard to increase public appreciation of the arts.

Faw became involved in theater "late in the game," he says, "at least compared with some people. I hung out with some of the theater kids through high school, even though I was a jock; they dragged me to my first audition the summer before college, which was for 'West Side Story,' and I fell in love."

Mt. Tabor Theatre Students Raise Money and Awareness

The Mt. Tabor theatre department is active in their community and in raising money for worthy causes. Not only are they NCTC Fundraising Partners, but they are also are making headlines for this great project! Read about it below!

 

The play's the thing. And so is the cause.

On Monday afternoon, 12 actors met at the home of their director, Rioghnach Robinson, to rehearse Reginald Rose's "Twelve Angry Men." It's a courtroom drama in which 12 jurors debate whether to convict a man of murder and send him to the electric chair.

The show opens Friday for a weekend run in the Mount Tabor High School Auditorium. Proceeds from this show will go to the Innocence Project of New York, a program that works to exonerate wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing and to reform the criminal justice system "to prevent further injustice." Robinson — whose Gaelic first name (pronounced Ree-Oh-Knock) honors her father's native Ireland — and the actors attend different Forsyth County high schools. They belong to The Baker's Dozen, a troupe that Robinson and Noelle Wells founded in spring 2010. The group presents a show each fall, winter and spring, and there's a succession plan to replace college-bound seniors with younger actors.

"Professional" Theatre in the North Carolina

We wanted to make sure you saw this article in the Charlotte Observer. It's an interesting commentary on the meaning of professional theatre and the state of the theatre in our great state. What do you think? Where do the pros go to act?

The word "professional" starts us down a slippery slope. If we define it as "paying some amount of money to the entire cast and/or crew," Actor's Theatre of Charlotte certainly qualifies. Other producers pay small salaries, provide honoraria or share box office receipts, and we have one company with paid, full-time performers and technicians on its staff: Children's Theatre of Charlotte, which has a touring arm in Tarradiddle Players.

Nor does "professional" automatically designate any level of quality: Davidson Community Players offered a "Ragtime" last year that was comparable with some touring musicals I've seen at Ovens, and those people - some of whom had been paid to sing elsewhere - worked for love of the art.

Stewart means a company that performs for adult audiences and pays enough of a living wage to let actors stay here year-round, without taking nonacting work.

It need not be a member of the League of Resident Theaters, operating on a fixed pay scale. (The Rep was, but only one remains in the Carolinas: Playmakers Repertory Company in Chapel Hill.) This imaginary theater would have to employ mostly local talent and develop an audience that followed it through seasons fat and lean. That we haven't had since 2005.

When the Rep collapsed, some people assumed another company would step into its big shoes. The admirable Actor's Theatre of Charlotte was the only realistic candidate, but ATC was content with its smaller budgets, cozy venue, small staff and loyal fans.

Man, 40s. Strong, tall and powerful figure. Starts out as the picture-perfect World War I soldier courting Zelda. Scarred in the war, lives hard in the 20s and falls fast in his 30s, by which time he is somehow darker of soul than the young soldier we met earlier. Strong singer/character actor.

Big Daddy:
50-65. Brick’s father. Large, brash and vulgar.

Big Mama:
50-65. Brick’s mother. Large, sincere. Earnest and crude at the same time.

Mae:
25-35. Schemes with her husband, Gooper, to secure Big Daddy’s real estate.

Gooper:
28-38. Successful lawyer. Big Daddy’s eldest son. Resents his parents’ love for Brick. Ruthless.

Dr. Baugh:
Man, 35-55. Big Daddy’s physician.

Rev. Tooker:
Man, 35-60. Tactless and opportunistic clergyman. Hypocritical.

Notes/What to bring:

Sides and a non-auditioning reader will be provided at the audition. Visually-impaired performers may request an advance copy of sides when making an audition appointment. Theatre also offers to provide sides in advance to non-visually-impaired performers who request them.

Performers may also sing as all/part of their auditions. Prepare a brief song in the style of one of the season’s musicals, showing range. Bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided throughout the audition day.

Please bring a photo and resume, stapled back-to-back.

Auditions for Greater Tuna at The Green Room Community Theatre

Auditions for The Green Room Community Theatre’s spring Black Box comedy, Greater Tuna, are scheduled for Sunday, January 29 & Monday, January 30, 2012 at 7:00 pm. 

Auditions will be held at the Old Post Office Playhouse located at 10 South Main Avenue, Newton, NC 28658.  Please enter at the lower level door at the back of the building (on South Ashe Avenue) and be prepared to stay for the entire audition time.

This hilarious comedy by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard, takes place in Tuna, Texas – where the population is small, but the personalities are big! 

The cast calls for two males, aged 18 or over.  The script is fast-paced as these two actors take on close to 30 roles!  No prepared monologues are necessary. There will be some cold reading from the script.  Please wear comfortable clothes for easy movement.

 Greater Tuna is produced by Cargo Transporters, and is directed by Andrew Turnbull.  Production dates for Greater Tuna are March 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, and April 1.  You must be able to be at all performances of the show.

Who is a Facebook User?

Mashable.com has published a great infographic about the average Facebook user and what he or she does on a daily basis.

What does it mean to be average on Facebook? On a given day, 26% of users “Like” a friend’s status, 22% comment on a friend’s status and 15% update their own status.

This infographic, created by JESS3, examines engagement statistics with the world’s most popular social network.

The average user has 229 friends, of which 22% are from high school, 12% are co-workers, 9% are from college and 3% they only met once. In 2008, the average user was 33. Two years later, the average user was 38, five years older.

Compared with other social networks, Facebook users are the most engaged. Fifty-two percent visit Facebook daily, beating out others for daily visitors, such as Twitter (36%), Myspace (7%) and LinkedIn (6%).
